Georgia Closer to Achieving EU Membership

Historic Moment in EU-Georgia Relations

Georgia Receives Positive Recommendations from European Council

In a significant development, the European Council has granted Georgia a perspective on membership in the European Union. This decision came after the country submitted an application for membership in March 2022.

During its meeting in June 2022, the European Council recommended that candidate status be granted to Georgia, signaling the country's progress in meeting the criteria for EU membership. The European Commission had previously issued a report in March 2022, commending Georgia's efforts in implementing the EU's Association Agreement and addressing reforms.

The next meeting of the EU-Georgia Association Council is scheduled for October 16, 2023, where further discussions on Georgia's integration into the European Union will take place. The process of EU accession requires extensive negotiations and reforms, ensuring that candidate countries align with the EU's standards and values.

Georgia's aspirations to join the EU have been met with support from both within the country and from EU member states. The country has expressed its commitment to implementing the necessary reforms, including strengthening democracy, promoting human rights, and developing a market economy.

The decision by the European Council is a testament to Georgia's progress in meeting the requirements for EU membership. It represents a historic moment in EU-Georgia relations and marks the beginning of a new phase in the country's journey towards full integration into the European Union.
